How to calculate number of Rise and Treads of Staircase

In this construction video tutorial, the renowned engineer Swati Sen provides some useful tips on how to calculate number of rise and treads of staircase.

This is a section of staircase (see below figure). The vertical line is rise and horizontal line is tread.

Now come to figure 2 here the building horizontal height is 10 feet and 6 inch and total tread is 15 feet.

Not we have calculated number of rise and tread here:
Desired Unit Rise = 6”
Number of Rise = Height of Building / Rise = 10’6”/6” = 21 no. of rise
Number of Tread = No. of Rise – 1

Number of Tread = No. of Rise – 1 = 21 – 1 = 20 no. of Tread
Tread = Total Tread / No. of Tread = 15’/10 = 0.75’ = 0.75’x12 = 9”

So, we are getting Number of Rise = 21 nos

Number of Tread = 20 nos
Tread = 9”
