Retaining walls are utilized
in the construction of basement under ground level, section walls of viaduct
and to retain slopes in mountainous terrain roads.
Retaining wall can be built through
brickwork and reinforced concrete. In instance of brickwork retaining wall, the
breadth of wall expands with height as masonry opposes the sideward pressure through
its weight. Therefore it is also known as gravity retaining wall. Whereas the
reinforced concrete retaining wall opposes the sideward pressure through structural
action like bending and outcomes in smaller section.
A retaining wall is a frame
that retains or keeps soil behind it. There are various kinds of materials that
can be utilized to make retaining walls such as concrete blocks, poured
concrete, designed timbers, rocks or stones. Some are user-friendly, others
have a shorter life expectancy, yet all can retain soil.
